Updated Fáilte Ireland guidelines for Restaurants and Cafes


Today, 19 June 2020, Fáilte Ireland in line with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published updated guidelines for the reopening of restaurants and cafes.

The updated Guidelines (click here to view) contain a range of measures to be implemented, some of which include :-

  • Social Distancing for Customers – The Guidelines state that in a controlled environment, such as pubs, bars, gastropubs, restaurants and cafés, physical distancing of at least 2 metres is required between tables, unless the risk mitigation requirements outlined in “Appendix 1 have been met, in which case a minimum of 1 metre is sufficient.” People seated at the same table should maintain a physical distance of at least 1 metre, unless they are from the same household.
  • Social Distancing for Employees – The Guidelines state that a distance of 2 metres and a minimum of 1 metre should be maintained between employees “as far as reasonably possible”. Where a 2-metre distance between employees isn’t possible, “all other measures to protect employees should be in place”. The Guidelines give examples of such measures, including the provision of PPE where required.
  • Isolation Area – The Guidelines have brought in a new suggestion of an isolation area (if possible) where any customer or employee showing symptoms can be isolated from other people until they leave the premises.
  • Duration – The Guidelines state that pre-booked time slots should be put in place that are for a maximum of 105 minutes. It is also stated that a period of at least 15 minutes between bookings should be set in order to allow proper cleaning and the arrival and departure of customers without mixing.
  • Contact Tracing – The Guidelines state that businesses must take the name and contact number of one person within each party. These details must be securely kept for 1 month.
